The Cuthbert family, successful indigo and cotton planters, built their fine Federal style house in 1790. To the classical style they added an elegance and airy spaciousness, the legacy of their West Indies migration from Scotland. The house served Cuthbert family descendants until captured along with all of Beaufort by Union forces in November 1861.
